QUICK START
~~~~~~~~~~~
>>>>> N O T E * See the CHANGES.TXT file for additional instructions
regarding this version (v8.1g) of GolfLog.
1.. Rename the executable file suited best suited for your
computer to GOLFLOG.COM
2.. Copy GOLFLOG.COM to a separate directory on your hard drive.
The directory can be named C:\GOLF as an example.
3.. Change to this directory and type GOLFLOG and press <Enter>
4.. At the Main Menu screen, select option [A] - Add Golfer
4a.... Complete the information at the screen that appears
asking for information (name, sex, age, etc). If all the
information entered is correct, press "Y" for Yes.
5.. At the Main Menu screen, select option [2] Add Course
5a.... Complete the information at this screen. You should
be able to get all the needed information from a scorecard
from the course you're recording. After you enter a Course
Record in the database you will not have to enter it again.
>>>>> The Course Manager/Club Pro should be able to tell
>>>>> you what the USGA Slope and USGA Rating is for the
>>>>> Course (it may also be found on the score card).
6.. At the Main Menu screen, select option [1] Add Game
6a.... Here you will need the scorecard from the game you're
about to record. Complete this screen and you will have a
Game Record stored in the database.
NOTE GolfLog will work best if you run the version designed for
your type of machine. If you have a 386 or 486 machine then run
the 386 version (GOLF_386.COM) and rename it to GOLFLOG.COM for
best results.
If you're upgrading from an earlier version, just rename the
appropriate ".COM" file to GOLFLOG.COM and copy it over the top
of the older copy you already had.
INSTALLATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~
GolfLog can be run from a floppy diskette or from a hard disk. If
it is run from a floppy diskette use a new diskette with no other
files on it except GOLFLOG.COM (GolfLog will run much slower on a
floppy diskette than when run from a hard disk).
NOTE * The file GOLFLOG.COM is obtained by renaming the proper
executable file (*.COM) to GOLFLOG.COM using the DOS "Rename"
command.
Example: RENAME GOLF_XT.COM GOLFLOG.COM
To rename the "XT" version
or
Example: RENAME GOLF_386.COM GOLFLOG.COM
To rename the "386/486" version
If you run GolfLog from a hard disk, make a separate directory and
call it something like GOLF or GOLFLOG. Your prompt, when in this
new directory, should look similar to C:\GOLF> (Note that GolfLog
will run much faster on a hard disk than it will when run from a
floppy). Copy GOLFLOG.COM to the new directory. No other file(s)
need be copied to this directory.
After you have GOLFLOG.COM on a floppy diskette or in a directory
on your hard drive, simply type GOLFLOG and press your <Enter> Key.
This will bring up the Main Menu screen where you will see all the
options available to you.
To get started properly you should:
1.. Enter yourself as the first Golfer Record
2.. Enter at least one Course Record (See note below)
3.. Enter at least one Game Record
NOTE ... Course Records need only be entered one time. From then
on, that Course will be available to you along with any
others you may have recorded.
See the CHANGES.TXT file for a revision history of GolfLog

WHAT GolfLog DOES
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GolfLog is a database program that allows a Golfer to keep up
with the progress of his/her game in several different ways. It
keeps detailed accounts of each game and allows the user to pull
up any Game Record for an extensive review of that particular game.
The Summary of all Games provides the Golfer with the totals of
many different facets of the game. If you want to know how many
strokes you have made since you started keeping records, it's in
the Summary. Other interesting items are also provided such as
the average strokes per hole for all the holes you've recorded,
the totals of all the Pars, Birdies, Bogeys, etc. for an entire
golfing season. This summary will probably be the most interesting
and informative source of game progress you will ever be able to
find. Need to know how much you've spent on Green Fees and/or
Cart Rental Fees? It's right there in the "Summary".
You can pull up for review, the score card for any game you`ve
recorded and check to see just what the score was on any hole you
wish. Need to know WHO you played what COURSE with on a given
DATE and what your SCORE was? No problem! If you entered names
of your playing partner(s) when you recorded the game, all that
information is right at your fingertips.
Arrow Keys (UpArrow and DownArrow) are to be used to move up
and down the Main Menu. The RightArrow and LeftArrow Keys must
NOT be used when running GolfLog as they serve no purpose.
It's only necessary to press these Keys ONCE when asked to do
so. Pressing them more than one time will cause the next screen
to appear and disappear before you get a chance to read it.
DO NOT use the "Arrow Keys" to move from one question to the
next. Each question requires an answer AND a response from
the <Enter> Key before it will record the answer. After answering
a question, press the <Enter> Key one (1) time before moving to
the next question.
Note.. The options listed on the Main Menu are "Hot Keys". This
means you DO NOT have to hit the <Enter> key after you press them.
Questions requiring a Yes or No answer are also "Hot Key"
options. They will be listed as [Y/N] Just press "Y"
REQUIREMENTS
~~~~~~~~~~~~
GolfLog requires a computer rated as being 100% IBM compatible.
Most clones on today's market will meet this requirement. GolfLog
requires a computer to have at least 512k of conventional memory.
Most computers available on the current market will have 640k as a
minimum with many offering 1 MegaByte or more. If you do encounter
memory problems running GolfLog, disable any TSR (Terminate-Stay-
Resident) running such as pop-up clocks, note pads, menus, etc.
A minimum of 300kb of free memory is an ideal operating environment
for GolfLog v8.1g
Your CONFIG.SYS file should contain the following statements:
FILES=20 (or more)
DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS (or directory where ANSI.SYS is located)
If running GolfLog v8.1g in a multitasking environment (Windows,
DESQview, etc.), set "Writes to screen" to YES.
GolfLog v8.1g has been tested on many different type and brands
of computers. It has never failed to work correctly on the test
machines. These machines varied from 8086 XT machines up to
80486 AT machines running at 66 Mhz. All of the test machines
were rated as being 100% IBM compatible.

Add Game Record
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is where you enter all the information on the score card
about the game(s) you've played. You should always bring the
score card home with you so you can be assured of entering the
correct information about each hole you played. When entering
the number of holes played, the only two answers accepted here
is either 9 or 18. Note that results from 9 hole games are not
used in the NET figures.
When you mark your score card be sure to mark the number of
greens hit in regulation, fairways hit, putts, sand save attempts,
etc. See page A/16 for a method of recording this information
for each hole.
When entering a new Game Record, after you select the Course
where the game was played, your Course Handicap will be
figured for you (only if you've recorded at least 10 full
18 hole games and had GolfLog compute your Handicap Index).
Steps:
1. Select the Golfer for whom the Game is to be recorded
by using the Up/Down Arrow Keys. When the Golfer's
name is highlighted, press <Enter>.
2. Select the Course where the game was played by using
the Up/Down Arrow Keys. When the correct Course
is highlighted, press <Enter>.
3. The next screen to appear will be the "Add Game"
screen. Enter the date the game was played or you
may press the <Enter> Key to select the current date.
4. Enter the names of the persons playing with you.
This field is limited to 30 characters, so it's best
to use only the first names if you were playing in a
foursome.
5. Enter the amount of the Green Fee paid. You may
skip this prompt by just pressing <Enter>. By
doing so will cause a zero value to be entered into
the record.
▒▒▒▒ GolfLog ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ Appendix A/6 ▒▒▒▒▒
6. Enter the amount paid for a Golf Cart rental. If
no rental fee was paid, simply press <Enter> to
skip to the next prompt.
7. Enter the number of holes played. The only figures
acceptable here are 9 or 18. If you enter a number
less than 9 GolfLog will assign a value of 9 to this
field in the record. If you enter a number greater
than 9, GolfLog will assign a value of 18 to this filed.
NOTE * If you enter 9 for the number of holes played,
you must then tell GolfLog whether you played the
first (front) nine or the second (back) nine.
8. Enter the score for each hole as the next prompts
appear. GolfLog will not accept a figure lower than
one (1) for any of the score figures. Do NOt use
the Right/Left Arrow keys to skip around on these
prompts. After you enter the score for a hole,
press <Enter> to go to the next hole.
9. Enter the number of Greens you reached in regulation.
One (1) stroke is regulation for a Par 3 hole, two (2)
strokes for a Par 4 hole, and three (3) strokes for a
Par 5 hole.
10. Enter the number of Putts you had during the entire
game.
11. Enter number of Fairways you hit from the Tee Box.
DO NOT include Par 3 holes in this figure. If your
ball lands in the fairway on a Par 3 hole, this is
considered a Green missed rather than a fairway hit.
12. Enter the number of times the Golfer made Par after
being in a greenside sand bunker.
13. Enter the number of times the Golfer was in a green-
side sand bunker.
14. If the Golfer made any wager with his/her playing
partners, enter the amount of money won here. If
the Golfer had several wagers with different people,
enter the total amount(s). See NOTE on page A/7 for
additional information regarding this entry.
▒▒▒▒ GolfLog ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ Appendix A/7 ▒▒▒▒▒
15. If the Golfer lost any wagers, enter the amount lost
here. (See NOTE below)
16. The next prompt will inquire if you wish to rate the
Club/Course. Press "Y" to do so or "N" to skip this
prompt. If you press "Y" for Yes, you must assign
a value from 1 to 5 for five different categories.
these categories are:
1. Greens
2. Fairways
3. Course Layout
4. Facilities
5. Personnel
N O T E * Pressing <Enter> at any of these 5
prompts without entering a number will cause the
default value of 2 to be entered in the Game Record.
17. The last prompt will give you the opportunity to
save the record by pressing the <SpaceBar>, to start
over by press the <BackSpace> Key or to quit without
without saving the record by pressing the <Escape> Key.
If the record is saved you will have added a Game Record
to the database.
This completes the adding of a Game record. To review this
record, select Item #3 from the Menu and then select the
record from the list provided.
Wagers:
N O T E * Many times a Golfer may make several wagers with
different playing partners. When entering the Amount WON from
these wagers, DO NOT subtract the loss from one wager from the
winnings of another. For example, if you had a $5.00 wager
with one player that you won and a $3.00 wager with another
player that you lost you should enter $5.00 for the amount
won and then enter $3.00 for the amount lost. Leave the
calculations to GolfLog to do for you.
Review Records
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here you will be presented a list of all Game Records in the
database. Use the UpArrow and DownArrow to select the Record
you wish to review by moving the highlight bar up or down the
list then pressing the <Enter> Key. These records will be
listed in order of low score first ascending to high score at
the bottom of the list. The Golfer's name will also be shown
along with the date the game was played.
You will first be shown a screen listing all the information you
entered when you first stored the record in the database. Other
information that GolfLog has compiled for you will also be shown

~~~~~~~
You must first select the Golfer whose summary you wish to see
by moving the highlight up or down the list presented to you
and pressing the <Enter> Key.
Delete Game, Golfer, Course Records
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is where you can delete Golfer, Game, and Course Records.
You will always be given the option of stopping before the
actual deletion is done. Note that when a record is deleted,
it cannot be recovered again. Also note that when a Golfer
Record is deleted, the Game Records for that Golfer will also
be deleted.

Course Handicap List
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here you will select a Golfer and provided he/she has already
established a Handicap Index, then be shown a list of all the
Courses recorded with the Golfer's Course Handicap for each.
If a Golfer shows to have a "0" Course Handicap, then he/she
either has not been assigned a Handicap Index by GolfLog or
he/she is a "scratch" Golfer with a Course Handicap of "0".
These Course Handicaps are what you should use when playing
the course selected.
Display Golfer Records
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This option will display the selected Golfer's record showing
name, age, sex, address, phone numbers, Handicap Index, their
USGA type Differential and the number of Games on record.
If the Golfer selected is 50 years old or older, the record
will indicate that the Golfer is classified as a Senior.
This has meaning when determining total scores, handicaps,
etc.

Print Records
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This option permits you to select the Game Record you wish to
print then prints the Game Record and the score card for that
game. This requires an Epson compatible printer capable of
printing in the 80 column format.
If your printer does not print the lines in the scorecard,
you need to set the DIP switches on your printer so it can
Handicap Index
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is where you determine your USGA type Handicap Index
along with those of three other additional players if your
have them recorded in the database. You must have a minimum
of ten (10) full 18 hole games recorded in the database for
the Golfer selected before GolfLog will compute the index for
you.
The Handicap Index determined by GolfLog should be reasonably
close to the one determined by the U.S.G.A. You will notice that
the Handicap Index provided by GolfLog is more "up to the minute"
than the official Index provided by the U.S.G.A.
NOTE ... An "official" Handicap Index can only be determined
by the U.S.G.A. Contact your local PGA professional (or your
Club Pro) about getting an official U.S.G.A. Handicap Index.
>> A Golfer does not play off his/her Handicap Index. You must
>> determine your Course Index for the course being played. GolfLog
>> will do this for you when a game is recorded in the database AND
>> you have previously determined your Handicap Index.
N O T E * It's not unusual to see a Handicap Index of 12.5 with
a Course Index of 15.
Steps:
1. Select the Golfer you wish to determine the
Handicap Index for.
2. Select the Course. This should be the Course
most often played or the Golfer's "home" course.
3. Enter the score for each of the last ten (10)
games the Golfer has played. To have GolfLog determine
an accurate Handicap Index, these scores MUST be from
the LAST 10 games played and NOT from 10 games selected
at random! They should also be from the same course.
4. After GolfLog presents you with the Handicap Index
you will be given the opportunity to save it to the
Golfer's personal record. Press <SpaceBar> to save,
<BackSpace> to start over or <Escape> to quit without
saving.

Keeping Scorecard
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In order for GolfLog to provide you with accurate information,
you have to feed it the correct data. To provide GolfLog with
correct information, you must enter it directly from your
score card. Always bring your scorecard home with you.
Your card should have a small box for recording the score for
each hole. This box is where you need to enter the additional
information.
PAR = 4
Hit Fairway from Tee -----=> F SS <=----- Saved Par from Sand
Use SX for missed
Score for this hole ------=> 4 Sand Save.
Missed Green in reg. -----=> GX P1 <=----- Number of Putts
Use G if hit in reg.
The above example would show the following:
1. The Golfer's drive landed in the fairway
2. The 2nd shot landed in a Sand Bunker
3. The Green was NOT hit on the 2nd shot
4. The Golfer blasted out of a Sand Bunker and
made the Putt to make Par.
--------------------------------------------------------------
PAR = 4
Missed Fairway from Tee --=> FX
Score for this hole ------=> 5
Hit Green in regulation --=> G P3 <=----- Number of Putts
Use GX if missed
The above example would show the following:
1. The Golfer's drive did NOT land in the fairway.
2. The 2nd shot landed on the Green.
4. The Golfer had 3 Putts and made Bogey for this hole.
